Kuelap with mountains in background

Trekking around Nuevo Tingo

The mountains and river of the Utcubamba valley prove a spectacular backdrop for treks to the many sites of interest that surround Nuevo Tingo. These half-day or day-long walks can be taken alone or accompanied by a local guide. For more information do please visit our tourist office on the Main Square.

Macro

This Chachapoyan settlement is dated 1100-1300AD and differs from most other local sites in that it is located on the hillside, just above the river Utcubamba.  Most other sites, such as Kuelap, were constructed on mountain ridges commanding views of the surrounding area.

This trek from Nuevo Tingo is relatively simple.  As we walk from the village to the river below we enjoy fantastic views of the valley and winding river.  We then walk alongside the river until we reach the cradle which carries us across it, from where we walk up to Macro.

Kuelap

Nuevo Tingo has become known in recent years as the home of the cable car to Kuelap. However, You can also hike from the village up to Kuelap. The trek begins walking down to Bajo Tingo, and then following the river, before the increasingly steep climb up to Kuelap itself. The trek is signposted and as you climb higher, the views get better. Remember that you will climb of over 1000 meters on the 4 – 5 hour walk and it is demanding. You always have the option of returning by cable car or taking the cable car up to Kuelap and walking back down
