STAY AND GET TO KNOW THE TOWN

Life in Nuevo Tingo.

A meal, a stroll around the plaza, a morning among the mountains. Nuevo Tingo has its small pleasures, and they’re worth making room for.

A SMALL TOWN, NO RUSH

Arrive in the afternoon.
Wake up in Tingo.

You don’t need several days to get to know Nuevo Tingo. One night gives you time to arrive in the afternoon, wander around the plaza, and have dinner in the village. The next morning, wake up among the mountains and head to Kuélap early, around your admission time and cable-car operation. It’s a simple way to experience a little of everyday life in an Amazonas village.

If you’re coming for a festival, the race, or a guided outing you’ve already arranged, you may want to stay a little longer.

Plan an overnight visit ↓

Meet the people who live here.

Ask where to eat, who can guide you, or which path is good for a walk. Your host is a good place to start, and a conversation in the plaza might give you another idea for the day.

Staying and eating in the village supports local businesses, too. Talk with them to find a place and services that suit you.

IN THE LAND OF THE CHACHAPOYA

A morning among the clouds.

The Chachapoya are often known as the “Cloud People,” a name associated with the mountain landscapes and cloud forests of this part of the Andes.

Before heading to Kuélap, give yourself a moment to look at the mountains. On misty mornings, clouds rise over the nearby slopes. You don’t need to go anywhere special: it’s one of the small pleasures of waking up in Nuevo Tingo.

There’s more to explore around here: Old Tingo by the river, a restored church, a small museum, and nearby Chachapoya sites.

A STOP ON YOUR WAY IN

Tambo Comunitario
Michi-no-Eki

Local products, crafts, and a little help planning your visit.

At the junction toward Nuevo Tingo and Leymebamba, you’ll find Tambo Comunitario Michi-no-Eki. It was created as a place for travelers to rest and find tourist information, and to discover local products and crafts.

Inspired by Japan’s roadside stations, it was inaugurated in November 2025 as Peru’s first Michi-no-Eki, with support from JICA.

Ask your host whether it’s open and which services and stalls are operating. We don’t have confirmed hours. It’s at the road junction, before the climb up to the village.

TINGO BAJO / OLD TINGO

Walk down to Old Tingo.

Follow the stairway down to Old Tingo in the Utcubamba Valley. There are resting spots and a viewpoint along the way. Down below, take a little time by the river and have trout for lunch at a riverside restaurant. Ask ahead about which place is open and what’s on the menu.

The official guide describes a walk of about 950 meters, and remember you’ll have an uphill trip back. Ask about trail conditions and allow time for the climb, or arrange a mototaxi.

RESTORED HERITAGE

Iglesia Matriz de Tingo

Tingo Bajo’s historic church preserves a mestizo Baroque altarpiece. Its restoration and improvements to the visitor route were inaugurated in October 2025. It is a separate church from the one shown in the Nuevo Tingo photos.

Entry requires permission from the person responsible for the church. Arrange your visit in advance and respect religious services.

IN NUEVO TINGO

Casa Museo Anaximandro

A small museum associated with Anaximandro Valdez Torres and local crafts, including work made from walnut seeds. Directories list it at Jr. Amazonas 577, Nuevo Tingo.

Ask your host whether the museum is receiving visitors and how to arrange entry. We don’t have confirmed opening hours.

Find the museum and check its listing ↗
ACROSS THE RIVER

Macro

A Chachapoya site on the valley slope, with platforms and circular buildings. Some structures can be seen from the opposite bank of the Utcubamba.

Viewing it from the valley and entering the site are different visits. Arrange an authorized route and current access with a guide; do not assume a direct crossing from Tingo.

ARCHAEOLOGY NEAR TOWN

Silic

Another Chachapoya settlement near Tingo, with circular structures and terraces in the lower valley. Extend your visit beyond Kuélap.

Check trail conditions and conservation work before going. The official listing calls for a guide who knows the internal paths.

A leisurely day around Tingo

Ask about the museum and church opening first. Then you could head down to Old Tingo, visit the church, and sit down to trout for lunch by the river. Arrange your return so you can enjoy the afternoon without rushing. If you’d like to enter Macro or Silic, plan a separate outing with a guide.

GET TO KNOW THE AREA WITH LOCAL HELP

Explore with a local guide.

A guide can help you understand the history and plan the route. For a walk around Tingo or a visit to nearby sites, start by asking your host.

AN OPERATOR IN NUEVO TINGO

Kuélap Family Tours

Their office is half a block from Nuevo Tingo’s central plaza. They offer excursions to Kuélap, Gocta, Karajía and Quiocta, and Revash and Leymebamba. Ask which trips leave from the village and whether they can arrange a guide for your visit.

Contact details published by the operator. Inquire and book directly; this guide is not affiliated with the business.

GET TO KNOW TINGO AND THE VALLEY

Ask about a walk that suits you.

If you’re interested in Old Tingo, Macro, or Silic, ask your host or the operator about someone who knows the route and can confirm access. These visits aren’t all part of a usual Kuélap excursion.

  • Say what you’d like to visit and ask about duration, elevation changes, and trail conditions.
  • Agree on your guide’s language and whether the outing is private or shared.
  • Ask for the total price and check transport, admission, meeting point, and return arrangements.

We don’t have a verified list of independent guides for these walks. Confirm who will accompany you and which route is authorized before booking.

TRADITION AND COMMUNITY

Virgen de Natividad festival

The Virgen de Natividad festival brings the village together for Masses and a procession through the streets. If your visit falls during the celebration, you can join the community respectfully and get to know a local tradition.

Next program: awaiting confirmation.

Check dates and activities with the municipality or your lodging before planning a trip. Ask permission before photographing people and respect religious observances.

EXPLORE MORE OF AMAZONAS

Beyond Kuélap.

If you’re exploring more of Amazonas, these places are worth a look. Each needs its own time and transport, so choose the ones that fit your trip.

01 / TOWN AND MUSEUM

Leymebamba

A town to explore.
A museum to understand.

Take a wander through Leymebamba and make time for its museum. It holds more than 200 mummies and funerary objects recovered from the Laguna de los Cóndores—a chance to learn more about the people who lived among these mountains.

Plan ahead: confirm transport, museum opening times and your return journey. The town and museum are separate stops; check the route on the map.

02 / ARCHAEOLOGY

Revash

Look toward the rock face: Revash’s mausoleums resemble little houses. The walk from San Bartolo brings you to another part of the Chachapoya story.

Plan ahead: access includes a walk from San Bartolo. Check trail conditions and arrange transport and a guide.

03 / NATURE

Gocta

For a day of walking among mountains and greenery, consider Gocta. You can start from Cocachimba or San Pablo; the routes are different, so ask which one suits you.

Plan ahead: allow a separate excursion, including road travel and walking. Choose a trail that suits your fitness and check weather and local access.

04 / LUYA HERITAGE

Karajía

Karajía’s human-shaped sarcophagi look out from high on a cliff. The visit from Cruzpata combines Luya’s scenery with another part of the Chachapoya story.

Plan ahead: arrange a separate outing and check access, guiding and trail conditions. Do not treat this as a quick stop after Kuélap.

05 / CAVES NEAR LÁMUD

Quiocta Caverns

Another world, beneath the mountains.

Near Lámud, Quiocta swaps mountain views for a journey underground. Lighting and walkways let you see stalactites, stalagmites, and other limestone formations.

Plan a separate outing from Nuevo Tingo or Chachapoyas. Ask about a tour combining Quiocta and Karajía. Confirm admission, guiding, transportation and equipment; wear shoes with good traction and follow the authorized route.

The official listing gives visiting hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with closure on Tuesdays. Confirm hours and conditions before traveling.

These are regional destinations, not places within walking distance of Nuevo Tingo. Arrange transport before setting off and check prices and opening times directly. Map links help with planning but do not confirm road conditions.

FROM CHACHAPOYAS

01 / INDEPENDENT TRAVEL

Colectivo or shared transport

If you like traveling independently, ask about shared rides to Nuevo Tingo or vehicles passing through Tingo toward Leymebamba. Your lodging can point you toward the departure stop and help you check which service is running that day.

  1. Before heading to the departure point, confirm its address, departure time and fare with the operator.
  2. Ask whether the vehicle goes up to Nuevo Tingo or drops you at the junction. If it stops below, arrange the final transfer before traveling.
  3. Tell the driver where you’re going: the plaza, your lodging, or the cable-car departure station. They are different stops.
  4. Confirm the return departure point and last service. Bring cash in soles and allow time to wait.
Contact transportation operators ↗

Ask locally about the departure stop, schedule, and fare. We don’t have a confirmed shared-transport timetable or price.

02 / ORGANIZED EXCURSION

With a tourist agency

If you’d rather have someone organize the day, you can book a Kuélap excursion from Chachapoyas. Ask what’s included: transport, the visit, and the return trip are commonly part of the plan, but each agency does things a little differently.

  • Confirm the meeting point or whether hotel pickup is included.
  • Ask for the total price and check transport, cable cars, site admission, guiding, language and meals.
  • Ask how much time you will have in Nuevo Tingo. If staying overnight, agree where your service ends and how you will return.

Examples to contact directly, without affiliation or bookings through this website.

03 / YOUR OWN SCHEDULE

Taxi or private transfer

With luggage, a family, or a departure time of your own choosing, a private transfer may suit you. Ask your lodging or a local operator to help arrange it, and agree on the price before setting off.

  • Specify your destination: lodging, Nuevo Tingo plaza or the cable-car departure station.
  • Check whether the price is per vehicle, one-way or round-trip, and whether waiting is included.
  • For a return on another day, agree the pickup time and place in advance.

Kuélap: official information ↗

Leave plenty of time between arriving in the village and your Kuélap admission time. You still have transfers, possible lines, and a walk ahead. Check that the cable cars are operating that day, too.

A useful question to ask the driver
“¿Este vehículo sube a Nuevo Tingo o me deja en el cruce? ¿Dónde me deja exactamente, cuánto cuesta y cómo puedo regresar a Chachapoyas?”

Ask: “Does this vehicle go up to Nuevo Tingo or drop me at the junction? Exactly where will you drop me, how much does it cost, and how can I return to Chachapoyas?”
